Aqiqah and Baby Naming Catering in Scarborough: A Simple Guide

An aqiqah is a celebration hosted by people running on no sleep. Here is how to keep the food simple, generous and completely off your plate.

An aqiqah has a wrinkle no other event has: the hosts have a newborn. Whatever you plan, plan it for people who are exhausted, who may need to cancel at short notice, and who should not be anywhere near a stove.

Rule one: cater it, all of it

This is not the event to cook for. Family will offer to help and you should let them help with everything except the food. Order it in, have it delivered, and spend the day with people instead of trays.

What to serve

Traditionally the meat is the centre of an aqiqah, and it should be generous. A practical menu is a large biryani, one lamb or beef dish, one chicken dish, a vegetable curry, rice, and something sweet. That is abundant without being complicated.

Keep dessert simple and portable. People will be holding a baby with one hand.

Quantity and headcount

Aqiqah headcounts are notoriously unreliable in the best way. People drop in. Cater for meaningfully more than you expect, 20 to 25 percent over, and send the leftovers home with family, which is very much in the spirit of the thing anyway.

Timing around a newborn

Keep the window short. Two to three hours is plenty. Serve early rather than late, because an event that drags is punishing for parents who have not slept. Tell the caterer your serve time and let them handle arriving hot and set up.

Ask about flexibility

Babies do not respect calendars. When you book, ask what happens if you need to move the date by a few days. A family-run kitchen will almost always work with you on this. A large commercial caterer often will not.
