Catering on a Budget in Toronto: An Honest Guide
Where to actually save on catering, and the three places you should never cut. An honest guide.
Most advice about catering on a budget is really advice about buying less food. That is not a strategy, that is just a smaller event. Here is where you can genuinely save, and where cutting will cost you.
Where you can safely save
Protein choice. Chicken instead of lamb or beef is the single biggest lever on your bill. Cooked properly, nobody is disappointed. This one change can move a quote by hundreds of dollars.
Pickup instead of delivery, if your order is small and the drive is short. Under 30 people and a two-hour event, you do not really need chafing dishes. Save the fee.
Fewer dishes. Four dishes done well is not a budget compromise, it is genuinely better than eight. You save money and the food is better. This is the rare free lunch.
Skip the appetisers. They are expensive per gram, people fill up on them, and then eat less of the food you actually paid for.
Where you must not cut
Quantity. Never. Ordering for exactly your headcount to save money is how you run out, and running out makes the entire event feel cheap in a way that no menu can fix. Order 20 percent over. It is the best money in the whole budget.
The mild and vegetarian options. Cutting these to save one dish means someone at your event eats bread. Do not do that to people.
Setup at scale. Over 50 people, food that is not in chafing dishes is cold food. That is not a saving, it is throwing away the money you already spent on the food.
Build around biryani
It is the most cost-effective impressive dish in catering. Rice and protein cooked together, looks abundant, feeds a crowd, everyone eats it. Anchor the menu on it and you have solved most of the budget problem before you start.
Tell your caterer the number
Be honest about the budget. A good kitchen will build a menu around it rather than up from it. We are a family-run halal Sri Lankan and Indian kitchen in Scarborough and catering starts at 20 dollars per person with a 20-guest minimum. See feeding 30 people on a budget, or affordable halal catering.
