Funeral and Memorial Catering in Toronto: What Actually Helps
Nobody plans for this. Practical, plain guidance on arranging food for a funeral, and what actually helps the family.
This is not an event anyone plans for, and the family is rarely in a state to organise anything. If you are the person arranging food, the goal is simple: feed people, and take the entire thing off the family’s hands.
Keep it simple and warm
This is not the moment for an elaborate menu. Rice, one or two curries, something vegetarian, bread. Warm, filling, comforting food that people can eat without thinking about it. Nobody is here for the food, but everybody needs to eat.
Plan for more people than you expect
Attendance at a funeral is almost impossible to predict, and it is usually higher than anticipated. Over-order significantly. Leftovers are useful. Family will be eating for days and will not want to cook.
Send food home with the family
This matters more than the event itself. In the days after, nobody in that house is going to cook. Ask the caterer to include extra trays specifically to leave with the family. It is the most genuinely useful thing you can do.
Timing is unpredictable, so say so
Tell the caterer upfront that the timing may shift, because it often does. A family-run kitchen will work with you on this. Ask about flexibility when you book, not after.
Handle it entirely
Do not go to the family with questions about the menu. Make the decisions. Order the food. Arrange delivery and setup. The whole value of what you are doing is that they do not have to think about it.
How we handle it
We are a family-run halal Sri Lankan and Indian kitchen in Scarborough and we cater funerals and memorials across the GTA. We will work around a changing schedule and we will include extra for the family to take home. See our catering page, or read about halal funeral catering in Toronto.
