What a walima asks of the host

The walima is the wedding feast hosted by the groom's family after the nikah. It is a sunnah, and the tradition values sharing food generously over showing off. Some families hold a small walima at home, others a large reception in a hall. Either way, the aim is the same: feed the guests well and let the community celebrate the marriage. That makes the food the centre of the event, and it makes budgeting the real decision.

Starting from a fixed budget

Many families set the walima budget first and then work out the guest list. Here is what a $6,000 food budget covers at different per-person prices from our menu, before tax and delivery:

Working backwards like this keeps the conversation honest within the family: if the guest list keeps growing, the combo choice has to move, or the list does. The Mutton Biryani Combo carries mutton biryani, chicken chukka, eggplant mojo, maasi sambal, pineapple curry, yogurt sambal, acharu and ktull wattalapam. Separate rooms, separate buffet lines

Some walimas seat men and women in separate halls or separate sides of a room. If yours does, plan the food as two services, not one:

Tell us the split, for example 160 in one room and 140 in the other, so the order can be planned for each side.
Set up two buffet lines with their own chafing dishes and serving spoons.
Name a serving lead for each side. We deliver drop-off only and do not provide servers.
Agree who carries extra trays between rooms if one side runs low.

Fitting the meal around salah

An evening walima usually falls near Maghrib or Isha. Check the prayer times for the date and decide whether guests pray first and then eat, or eat first. Many hosts open the buffet after Maghrib so guests are not interrupted mid-meal. Time the drop-off to arrive before that, so the food is set and covered while people pray. In Scarborough, a hall is usually 10 to 20 minutes from our kitchen, which makes this kind of timing easier to plan.

A small walima at home

A walima does not have to be large to fulfil the sunnah. Some families host 30 to 50 people in the living room after a quiet nikah. For 40 guests, Ghee Rice Combo 5 at roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount) (ghee rice with any meat and any two vegetable dishes) is confirmed in your event quote. If the group is under 20, catering trays fit better: small feeds 5 to 8, medium 10 to 15, large 20 to 30, priced by quote. Weekend pickup from our kitchen on Saturday or Sunday is also an option for a home walima.

Guests at a walima will reasonably ask. Our chicken, beef and lamb are HMA-certified halal, and documentation is available on request. If an elder or imam wants to see it, ask us before the day.
