The Blessed Kitchen Story: A Family Kitchen in Scarborough

We are a family kitchen in Scarborough cooking halal Sri Lankan and Indian food the way it is cooked at home. Here is the story.

Blessed Kitchen is a family kitchen. That is not a marketing line, it is a description of who is standing at the stove.

Where we are

We are on Passmore Avenue in Scarborough, in a plaza, which is where most of the best food in this city quietly lives. We are open on weekends, which is when a family kitchen is at its strongest, because that is when everyone is in it.

What we cook

Halal Sri Lankan and Indian food. Biryani, kottu roti, rice and curry, and the dishes that people from home actually miss. We cook them the way they are cooked at home, which means roasted curry powder, coconut milk, curry leaves and pandan, and heat that is there for balance rather than for show.

Everything is halal. Not some things. The whole kitchen.

What we are not

We are not a big commercial caterer. We do not have a slick room. What we have is a family that has been making these dishes for a very long time and has gotten very good at them.

Catering is most of what we do

Weddings, corporate lunches, engagements, aqiqahs, iftars, funerals. Feeding a room is what this food was built for. Biryani and curries hold their heat, they scale without losing quality, and a proper tray of them reads as generous in a way a plated dish never does.

Catering starts at 20 dollars per person with a 20-guest minimum, and we deliver across the GTA.

The dish most families order from us is a ghee rice combo. You can order online for delivery or pickup.

Recipes that came with the family

The dishes we cook are family recipes passed down through generations. In practice that means the biryani is built the same way every time, the spice blends are roasted and ground the way they were taught, and nobody is experimenting with the menu to chase a trend. If a dish is on our list, it is because the family has cooked it for a long time.

Dishes you have to ask for

Two things we make are not on the online menu: butter chicken and lamb biryani. If you want either one, call or text (647) 449-2924 and we will sort it out with you directly. Several of our special dishes, such as Crab Curry, Chicken Palandi and Kada Devil, are priced on request and need a group of 10 or more.

Dishes we have chosen not to make

People ask us for lamprais, hoppers, egg hoppers, milk hoppers and plain string hoppers. We do not make them. We would rather say that plainly than turn out a version we are not proud of. What we do make in that spirit: Puttu Mixed, Jaffna Moor Puttu, Roast Bread, Coconut Roti and, for groups, the String Hopper Biryani Combo at $29 per person. You can read more in what lamprais is.

How the food leaves our kitchen

We do not have a dining room. Everything goes out as takeout, delivery or catering. On Saturday and Sunday you can pick up from 328 Passmore Avenue, Unit 59. For delivery we use our own direct ordering page and Uber Eats. We are not on SkipTheDishes.

Catering is drop-off or pickup. We do not run on-site cooking and we do not send servers. Food arrives packed and ready to serve, and the host takes it from there. That keeps us focused on the cooking, and it is how we can handle a small family lunch one weekend and an event of 1,000 or more guests the next.

Halal with paperwork

Our chicken, beef and lamb are HMA-certified halal. If you are organising a mosque event, a nikah or a walima and need to show documentation to a committee or a family elder, ask and we will provide it.
