Inviting neighbours and coworkers to your Eid dinner
Some Markham families use Eid to open the door wider: the neighbours who shovelled your driveway, the team from work, your children's friends and their parents. Many of these guests have never had Sri Lankan food, and a few have never been to an Eid meal. A little explanation on the table goes a long way, and it lets you enjoy the evening instead of answering the same question twenty times.
What your guests will find on the table
Using the Beef Biryani Combo as the example, here is what each dish is, in plain words you can borrow for table cards:
- Beef biryani: spiced rice cooked with beef, Northern Sri Lankan style. The main event.
- Whole deep-fried chicken: crisp outside, mild enough for most children.
- Green-pea cashew curry: creamy, gentle, and meat-free. Contains cashews.
- Eggplant moju: eggplant cooked down in a sweet, sour and spicy marinade. A little goes a long way.
- Pineapple curry: sweet pineapple with light spice. Often the surprise favourite with first-timers.
- Maasi sambol: a fiery, crunchy relish made with dried Maldives fish, onion, chili and lime. Not for anyone avoiding fish or heat.
- Acharu: a tangy Sri Lankan pickle of fruit and vegetables.
- Custard dessert: the cool, sweet finish.
Labels that save questions
Write small cards for each tray: "halal", "contains nuts", "contains fish", "spicy", "no meat". Put the spicy and fish items at the end of the line so nobody piles them on by accident. Guests who keep vegetarian can build a plate from the pea curry, pineapple curry, eggplant moju and acharu, but if several guests are vegetarian, ask us about adding the Vegetable Biryani Combo (quoted for your event) so they get a proper main.
When children are on the guest list
Kids at an Eid dinner tend to go straight for the fried chicken and the biryani, then the dessert. Make a small kids' plate first with those three, before the sambols get near them. Our Mango Lassi ($6, made with yogurt) is a good drink for younger guests, and keeping it on its own table stops the buffet line from stalling. Keep the maasi sambol at the adult end.
Fifteen minutes from our kitchen
Markham is about 10 km from Passmore Avenue, roughly a 15 minute drive. That short distance is useful at Eid. Instead of having the food land hours early, you can ask for a delivery window that ends just before you plan to eat, which leaves less time for trays to sit. Give us your timing when you book and we will tell you what slot we can offer on the day. Eid is busy, so do not leave it to the last week. If your dinner is on the evening of a weekday Eid, mention that too, since after-work traffic on the 404 and the 407 can be slow.
Hosting at home rather than a hall? Clear the dining table for the buffet and set drinks somewhere else, so the line does not jam at the rice. Our catering is drop-off or pickup only, so setup and serving are yours.
Two Markham Eid budgets
quotes each event based on menu and headcount with a 20-person minimum. Totals are before tax and delivery.
- 40 guests, Beef Biryani Combo at quoted for your event: final pricing depends on your menu and headcount.
- 85 guests, Chicken Biryani Combo 2 at quoted for your event: final pricing depends on your menu and headcount. Swap beef biryani for chicken biryani and deep-fried chicken, with the same pea curry, moju, pineapple curry, acharu, maasi sambol and custard. A safe choice when you do not know every guest's preferences.
