Feeding the graduate's friends and the grandparents

A graduation party usually has two very different crowds. The graduate's friends want food they can grab and eat while standing around talking, and plenty of it. The grandparents, aunts and uncles want a proper plate of rice and curry and a chair to eat it in. A good menu covers both without doubling the order.

Fried chicken and biryani keep the younger crowd happy. Curries, sambols and a coconut custard such as vattalappam are what the elders look for. Chicken Biryani Combo 2 (roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount)) covers both ends of the room: chicken biryani, deep-fried chicken, pineapple curry, eggplant moju, acharu, maasi sambol, green-pea cashew curry and custard dessert.

Open house or sit-down dinner

Many families host graduations as an open house, with people dropping by across an afternoon. Others hold a single sit-down dinner. The format changes how you set up:

• Open house: guests eat at different times. Keep trays in chafing dishes, bring out a fresh tray as one empties, and give drinks and dessert their own spot so the food table does not jam.
• Sit-down dinner: everyone eats at once, so speed matters. Two serving lines, one on each side of the table, cut the wait roughly in half. Ask the graduate to say a few words after everyone has eaten, not before, so nobody is holding a plate through the speeches.

Book before convocation season fills up

Most high school, college and university ceremonies in the GTA fall in late spring and June, so many grad parties land on the same few weekends. If your party is on a June weekend, contact us as soon as the ceremony date is announced. You can confirm the final headcount later. A grad party for a winter convocation is easier to book, but tell us about any snow or parking issues at your address.

Prices are before tax and delivery. quotes each event based on menu and headcount with a 20-person minimum. For a team or club celebration where everyone wants their own meal, individual boxed lunches are also available. Ask for a quote.

The dessert question

Most grad parties have a cake, so decide early if a second dessert is needed. Combo 2 includes a custard dessert. If you want something more traditional, vattalappam ($15) is a Sri Lankan coconut custard made with kithul jaggery, eggs and warm spices. It contains eggs, so mention it to anyone with an egg allergy. A tray of it next to the cake gives the older guests a choice they will recognize, and the younger ones can try both. Close to home in Scarborough

Our kitchen is at 328 Passmore Avenue, Unit 59 in north Scarborough, so most Scarborough addresses are 10 to 20 minutes away. Pickup is an easy option: one family member can collect the trays while the graduate is still taking photos in the gown. Mango lassi ($6) makes a good summer drink. It contains dairy, so keep it cold until serving.
