Rice and curry catering spread at Blessed Kitchen

For a spread that feels like a home-cooked Sri Lankan meal, rice and curry catering is the way to go. We prepare rice with a selection of curries and sides in quantity, so your guests can build their own plates the way they would at home.

Building the spread

A typical catering spread has rice, a dhal, one or two meat curries, a vegetable curry, coconut sambol and papadam.

How catering works

Rice and curry lets guests build their own plates, home-style. We are a weekend kitchen, so we cater by preparing your order fresh and having it ready for pickup, or delivering it within our range. We do not staff events on site; we send the food, packed and ready to serve.

Rice and curry for a crowd

Rice and curry is the everyday meal of Sri Lanka: rice in the middle and several smaller dishes around it. For events, our ghee rice combos turn that into a catering spread. Ghee Rice Combo 1 has eight dishes, including mutton kuruma, fried chicken, pineapple curry and potato milk curry. Ghee Rice Combo 3 has ten, including Bengal masala T-bone steak. Saffron Ghee Rice Combo brings boneless mutton devil and fried whole chicken.

Ghee rice combos run $15 to $30 per person with a 20 person minimum. Ask about our catering trays for 5 to 30 people (small feeds 5 to 8, medium 10 to 15, large 20 to 30).

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

Laying out a rice and curry buffet

We drop the food off packed and ready; the layout is yours. A good order on the table keeps the line moving:

  1. Plates first, then rice. Guests take a full scoop of rice before anything else.
  2. Meat and main curries next, in chafing dishes, so they stay hot.
  3. Vegetable curries after that. Eggplant moju, pineapple curry and potato milk curry.
  4. Sambols, acharu and dessert last, in small bowls with small spoons. Maasi sambol and acharu are eaten in small amounts, so big trays of them go to waste.

Small details that matter

  • One serving spoon per dish. Shared spoons mix flavours and cause allergy problems.
  • Put a card next to anything with egg, fish, nuts or dairy.
  • For more than 100 guests, set up two identical lines rather than one long one.
  • Bring dessert out after the main meal, not at the start.

A sample budget

50 guests on Ghee Rice Combo 4 (8 dishes): 50 x $28 = $1,400 before tax and delivery. For a simpler spread, Ghee Rice Combo 5: 50 x $15 = $750. See ghee rice combos for every option.
