Devilled chicken is the starting point, but it is one of a family of dishes cooked the same way. Here is what we make, with prices exactly as listed:

  • Chicken Devil, $12.99: wok-tossed chicken in our special paste.
  • Beef Devil, $12.99: the classic Sri Lankan beef devil curry.
  • Boneless Mutton Devil, $14.99: tender mutton in a fiery devil sauce.
  • Fish Devil, Tiger Shrimp Devil, Kada Devil (quail) and Thai Lobsters Devil: price on request, for groups of 10 or more.

Devil or chilli chicken?

People mix these up. Our Chilli Chicken ($14.99) is boneless and crispy, cooked in a spicy garlic sauce, so it eats more like a fried dish. A devil is wok-tossed in a thick paste with onion and capsicum, so it is saucier and clings to rice. If you want crunch, take the chilli chicken. If you want something to spoon over ghee rice, take the devil.

What to eat it with from our kitchen

  • Ghee rice or a plain biryani to soak up the sauce.
  • Coconut roti ($12, with beef curry and dhal) for tearing and scooping.
  • Something cooling: yogurt sambal or a mango lassi ($6).

Reheating leftovers

Devil dishes reheat well in a frying pan over medium heat with a spoon of water, which loosens the paste without drying the meat. Refrigerate within two hours and eat within a couple of days.

Devil questions we get asked

How hot is a devil compared to a regular curry?

Hotter, as a rule. A devil is a dry, thick, chilli-led dish, while most curries are softened by coconut milk. If you are unsure, order a devil alongside a mild curry such as potato milk curry and share both.
