Devilled chicken is the spicy, sweet, tangy dish that disappears fastest off the table. Fried chicken tossed in a hot wok with onion, capsicum, green chilli and a glossy sweet-and-sour sauce. In Scarborough it is one of the most requested items on our weekend menu, ordered on its own or as a side to share.

How we make it

We fry the chicken first so it stays firm, then finish it fast over high heat with peppers and onions so the vegetables keep their crunch. The sauce brings the sweet, the chilli brings the heat, and there is a sharp tang at the end. Tell us how hot you want it.

How to get it

Great with rice or kottu. We are a weekend kitchen, so pickup is from our Scarborough location on Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 5. If you are inside our Uber Eats delivery range, we can also drop it at your door.

What makes a good devil

A Sri Lankan devil is wok-fried hard and fast with onion, capsicum and a sweet, sour, chilli paste until the sauce turns sticky. It should cling to the chicken, not pool on the plate. Our Chicken Devil is $12.99, Beef Devil is $12.99 and Boneless Mutton Devil is $14.99.

Feeding a group

Devils are the dish that makes a spread feel Sri Lankan. Add a devil tray to any biryani combo for parties. Ask about our catering trays for 5 to 30 people (small feeds 5 to 8, medium 10 to 15, large 20 to 30).

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

Why it is called devilled

"Devilled" is an old English cooking word for food made hot and sharp with spice. In Sri Lanka the name stuck to a style of wok cooking with onion, capsicum and a sweet, sour and hot sauce, and it became a standard at parties and Sri Lankan Chinese-style restaurants.

A devil dinner for four

Two Chicken Devils ($25.98), one Kottu Roti ($13) and one Fried Rice (Beef) with hot chilli beef ($22) is confirmed in your event quote. The kottu and rice soak up the sauce, and the devils give the table its heat.

Reheating without losing the crunch

The microwave turns the sauce soft and the peppers limp. Warm leftovers in a hot pan for a few minutes, tossing so the sauce sticks again. Eat them within three to four days.
