Halal you can check, not just take on trust

For many North York families, the first question about any caterer is simple: is the meat really halal? At Blessed Kitchen, our chicken, beef and lamb are HMA-certified halal, and documentation is available on request. If your masjid committee or an elder in the family wants to see it before you book, ask and we will share it.

A few questions worth asking any caterer, including us:

• Which certifying body covers the meat, and can I see the paperwork?
• Is every meat dish on my menu covered, or only some?
• Are seafood or fish dishes included, so I can tell guests what is in them?

Timing an iftar delivery around maghrib

North York is about 20 km west of our kitchen, roughly 25 minutes along the 401 on a quiet road. During Ramadan, though, the evening rush on the 401 often lines up with the hours before sunset. Maghrib also moves a minute or two each day through the month.

When you book an iftar, give us three things: the exact maghrib time for your date, the venue address, and the entrance the driver should use. We then plan for the food to arrive well before the fast opens. Most iftars follow the same order: break the fast with dates and water, pray maghrib, then sit down to the meal. Keep trays covered in chafing dishes through the prayer so the food is hot when people return.

Dates, water and drinks are not on our catering menu, so the host plans those.

A masjid hall iftar for 100

For a community iftar of 100 people, the Mutton Biryani Combo is a generous choice at roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount). That is confirmed in your event quote. Each guest gets mutton biryani, chicken chukka, eggplant mojo, maasi sambal, pineapple curry, yogurt sambal, acharu and ktull wattalapam.

The yogurt sambal is cooling after a long fast, and the wattalapam gives a sweet finish. If the budget is tighter, the Chicken Biryani Combo 2 at roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount) the total is confirmed in your event quote for the same 100 guests. quotes each event based on menu and headcount with a 20-person minimum.

Note for the organisers: the wattalapam contains eggs, the yogurt sambal contains dairy, and the maasi sambal contains dried Maldives fish.

What the host team still needs to bring

1. Dates and water for opening the fast.
2. Chafing dishes and fuel, unless the hall supplies them.
3. Plates, cutlery, napkins and serving spoons.
4. Volunteers to serve. Catering is drop-off or pickup only, with no on-site staff from us.
5. Separate serving lines or tables if your hall seats brothers and sisters apart.
6. Containers and a plan for leftovers, which should be refrigerated within two hours.

Nikah, Eid and family gatherings in North York

Outside Ramadan, the same 25 minute run works well for a nikah lunch at home, an Eid open house or a walima in a hall. Our range covers small groups up to 1,000+ guests. For smaller gatherings, catering trays come in three sizes, feeding 5 to 8, 10 to 15 or 20 to 30. Ask for a quote, as tray prices are not published.

A lot of North York families live in condos and apartment towers. If your gathering is in a building, book the service elevator, tell the concierge or security desk that a food delivery is coming, and find out where a vehicle can stop to unload.
