Sri Lankan puttu at Blessed Kitchen Scarborough

Puttu is a Sri Lankan and Tamil breakfast staple that too few people in Toronto know about. Steamed cylinders of ground rice and fresh coconut, light and soft, traditionally eaten with a curry or a sweet side. It is simple, comforting food that tastes like home for a lot of people.

We make it a few ways: classic puttu mixed, keerai puttu with greens, and Jaffna moor puttu. Each one is steamed fresh, never sitting around, so it comes out soft and fragrant.

Made to order, always halal

Our puttu

Puttu is rice flour layered with fresh coconut and steamed in a tube. You break it up and mix it with curry and sambol. Puttu Mixed is $20 with your choice of meat, dhal curry and coconut sambol. Jaffna Moor Puttu (with any meat, potato milk curry and red onion sambal) and Keerai Puttu (with greens) are available on request.

How to eat it

Break the puttu with your fingers, pour over the curry and dhal, add a little coconut sambol, and mix. It soaks up gravy like nothing else.

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

Puttu from Jaffna to Kerala

Puttu is eaten on both sides of the Palk Strait, in northern Sri Lanka and in Kerala, and the idea is the same: rice flour, moistened and layered with grated coconut, then steamed in a tall tube called a puttu kuzhal. Kerala households often pair it with black chickpea curry or banana and sugar. In Jaffna Tamil homes it is just as common with a meat curry, dhal and sambol, which is closer to how we serve ours.

Breakfast or dinner?

Both. Puttu is a classic breakfast, but with a meat curry it is a full dinner, and plenty of families eat it at night. On a weekend it makes a slow, filling brunch.

Puttu and string hoppers

Puttu and string hoppers use similar rice flour but end up very different: puttu is crumbly and soft, string hoppers are thin steamed noodle nests. We do not make plain string hoppers. If you want that taste for a group of 20 or more, the String Hopper Biryani Combo is $29 per person. For a single plate, puttu is the dish to order.

Reheating puttu

Puttu dries out in the fridge. To bring it back, sprinkle a little water over it, cover it, and steam or microwave it briefly until soft. Keep the curry separate and heat it on its own.

A puttu dinner for four

Two Puttu Mixed ($40), one Coconut Roti with beef curry and dhal ($12) and one Vattalappam to share ($15) comes to $67 before tax. Pick a different meat for each puttu so the table gets two curries.

Order with our order direct page, or call (647) 449-2924 for the on-request versions. More ideas: traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.
