Our closest everyday dish

Puttu is the everyday dish closest to string hoppers on our menu. It is rice flour layered with coconut and steamed, then eaten with curry and sambol. Puttu Mixed is $20 with your choice of meat, dhal curry and coconut sambol. For groups of 20 or more, the String Hopper Biryani Combo (roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount)) brings real string hoppers to the table, cooked biryani style.

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

What String Hopper Biryani actually is

Plain string hoppers (idiyappam) are steamed nests of rice-flour noodles, usually eaten with a mild coconut gravy and sambol. String Hopper Biryani takes those nests, breaks them up, and cooks them with biryani spices, meat or egg and vegetables, so the noodles take on colour and flavour the way rice does in a normal biryani. It is a festive dish, which is why we make it for groups rather than as a single plate.

Ours comes as the String Hopper Biryani Combo, roughly $20 to $30 per person (quoted on menu and headcount) with a 20 person minimum. The combo includes chicken korma, eggplant moju, pineapple curry, yogurt sambal and maasi sambal.

What goes with string hoppers

At home in Sri Lanka, plain string hoppers are usually eaten with kiri hodi (a thin, mild coconut milk gravy), a curry and pol sambol.
