Roast Bread and Coconut Roti in Scarborough
Roast bread with coconut sambal and egg milk curry, and coconut roti with beef curry and dhal.
Ask a Sri Lankan what they miss most and a surprising number will not say biryani or kottu. They will say the simple things: a warm roti with curry, or bread torn up and dipped into a pot of gravy. These are the everyday meals, and they are the ones that taste most like home.
Coconut roti, $12
Coconut roti, pol roti in Sinhala, is a thick flatbread with grated coconut mixed into the dough. It is slightly sweet, a little chewy, and made to be eaten with curry. We serve it with beef curry and dhal curry, so you get something rich and something mild on the same plate.
Roast bread, $13
Roast bread is a Sri Lankan bakery loaf, toasted and served with coconut sambal and egg milk curry. The sambal brings chilli and lime, the milk curry is gentle and creamy, and together they make one of the most comforting meals you can have at any time of day.
Who these are for
They are a good choice if you want a lighter meal than a full rice combo, if you are ordering for someone who grew up with this food, or if you just want to try the everyday side of Sri Lankan cooking. For a heavier plate, see our kottu roti, which is roti chopped and stir-fried, or our ghee rice combos.

Roast bread or coconut roti?
Roast Bread ($13) comes with coconut sambal and egg-milk curry: soft, simple, comforting. Coconut Roti ($12) comes with beef curry and dhal curry: chewier, with coconut in the dough. Both are the kind of food Sri Lankan families eat at home on a slow morning.
Allergy notes
Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.
Next-morning reheating
Bread and roti are best fresh, but leftovers come back well:
- Warm coconut roti in a dry frying pan, about a minute per side, until it softens again.
- Toast leftover roast bread in a pan or toaster. The microwave makes it chewy.
- Heat the curries separately in a pot with a spoon of water to loosen them.
- Keep the coconut sambal cold and serve it at room temperature. It is not meant to be heated.
A table for three
Order one each of Roast Bread ($13), Coconut Roti ($12) and Puttu Mixed ($20) and share them. is confirmed in your event quote, and it puts three different bases on the table with egg-milk curry, beef curry, dhal, coconut sambal and a meat of your choice. Add a Mango Lassi ($6) if anyone wants a cold drink. Curious about the puttu? See our puttu page.
What is in them
For anyone checking ingredients: roast bread is a wheat loaf, and Sri Lankan coconut roti is traditionally made with wheat flour. The egg-milk curry served with roast bread contains egg, and both plates rely on coconut. If you have an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.
