Sri Lankan Hoppers in Toronto — Where to Find Authentic Bowl Pancakes

Sri Lankan hoppers explained. What they are, how to order them, and where to find authentic egg hoppers and plain hoppers in Toronto.

Hoppers — Toronto most underrated Sri Lankan dish

Hoppers (also spelled appam) are a Sri Lankan specialty most Toronto food eaters have not tried. They are bowl-shaped fermented coconut pancakes with crispy edges and a soft, slightly sour middle.

The two main types

  • Plain hoppers: classic — just the bowl shape, eaten with curry
  • Egg hoppers: with an egg cracked into the centre during cooking

How to eat hoppers

Tear off pieces with your hands. Dip into chicken curry, fish curry, or pol sambol. String hoppers are a different dish entirely (steamed rice noodle nests).

How we make our hoppers

Our hoppers is prepared the traditional Northern Sri Lankan way using halal-certified ingredients. Daily fresh preparation, no warming-tray reheats. Spice level customized to your preference (mild, medium, hot, or Sri Lankan hot).

Pairing recommendations

Best paired with white rice or string hoppers, side curries (chicken, fish, or vegetable), pol sambol (coconut chili relish), and a cooling mango lassi or king coconut water.

Catering portions

hoppers catering trays available in three sizes: small (feeds 5-8), medium (feeds 10-15), large (feeds 20-30). Pricing varies by protein choice. Live cooking station option available for events.

Why our hoppers stands out

Most Toronto Sri Lankan halal restaurants compete on price. We compete on authenticity and consistency — chef-supervised daily preparation, halal certification documented, and recipes that haven't changed since my parents opened. The result is the same dish you'd get from a Northern Sri Lankan kitchen, served in Scarborough.

Customer feedback patterns

The most common feedback we get on hoppers: "this tastes like it was made in Sri Lanka." That's the bar we hold ourselves to.

Order options

Available for dine-in, takeout, delivery (UberEats, SkipTheDishes, DoorDash, direct), and catering. Direct orders save delivery platform fees and support our small family business directly.
