Sri Lankan Crab Curry in Scarborough
Fresh crab in a rich Sri Lankan curry, cooked to order for groups of 10 or more.
Crab curry is one of the dishes Sri Lankans get homesick for. It is messy, it takes time, and it is almost never on a restaurant menu because it does not work as a quick takeout order. That is also why it is the dish that makes a family event feel like home.
At Blessed Kitchen we cook crab curry as a special order for groups of 10 or more. Fresh crab goes into a rich, deeply spiced gravy, and we price it on request because crab prices change week to week.
What makes it different
A good crab curry is about the gravy as much as the crab. Roasted spices, coconut and a slow cook turn it thick enough to coat rice properly. The crab flavours the gravy as it cooks, so every spoonful of rice tastes of it, even for people who never crack a shell.
Serving it at an event
- Put out finger bowls and extra napkins. There is no clean way to eat crab and nobody should try.
- Serve it with ghee rice or plain rice. The gravy is the point, so give it a base that soaks it up. Our ghee rice combos work well.
- Pair it with one dry dish. A devil dish or fried chicken balances a wet, rich curry.
- Warn guests who are new to it. It is a hands-on dish, and people enjoy it more when they expect that.
Crab curry and the rest of the seafood menu
Crab curry sits alongside our lobster, tiger shrimp and fish devil dishes. If you are planning a seafood-heavy table, see the seafood devil catering page to put the menu together.
How to order
Call (647) 449-2924 with your date and headcount. Give us a few days of notice so we can source the crab fresh. Everything is cooked in our halal kitchen in Scarborough. See the full catering menu for everything else we make for events.
Ordering crab curry
Crab curry is made for groups of 10 or more and priced on request, because it is cooked fresh to order. It is rich, spicy and messy in the best way. Have plenty of rice on the table: a ghee rice or vegetable biryani combo pairs well. Call or text (647) 449-2924 with your date and headcount.
Allergy notes
Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.
How to eat it at the table
- Spoon gravy over your rice and eat a few mouthfuls while the crab cools.
- Pull off the legs and claws, then crack the shell with the back of a spoon, a nutcracker or your teeth.
- Use a small fork or the tip of a leg to pull the meat out.
- Finish the last of the gravy with rice.
Shellfish at a mixed table
Crab is a shellfish, and shellfish allergies can be serious. Put the crab curry at the end of the buffet with its own serving spoon and a clear label, so other dishes stay untouched.
