Sri Lankan Fried Rice in Scarborough

Chicken, beef, tiger shrimp or seafood fried rice, each with a chilli side. From $20.

Sri Lankan fried rice is not the takeout fried rice most people picture. It comes out of the same wok tradition as kottu roti: high heat, plenty of pepper, and a spicy dish on top that turns a plate of rice into a full meal.

What we serve

  • Chicken fried rice with chilli chicken, $20. The one most people start with.
  • Beef fried rice with hot chilli beef, $22. Hotter and richer.
  • Shrimp fried rice with chilli tiger shrimp, $23.
  • Seafood fried rice, $22. Mixed seafood and vegetables through the rice.

Why the chilli side matters

The rice is well seasoned, but the chilli dish on top is what makes it Sri Lankan. Chilli chicken and chilli beef are dry fried with peppers and onions, so every forkful gets heat and a bit of crunch. If you like it, try our chilli chicken on its own.

Fried rice or kottu?

Kottu is chopped roti stir-fried with egg and meat, heavier and more filling. Fried rice is lighter and easier to share. Plenty of people order one of each. See kottu roti if you have never had it, or Sri Lankan noodles for another wok dish.

Fried rice options

  • Fried Rice (Chicken), $20, with chilli chicken
  • Fried Rice (Beef), $22, with hot chilli beef
  • Fried Rice (Sea Food), $22, with mixed seafood and vegetables
  • Fried Rice (Shrimp), $23, with chilli tiger shrimp

Sri Lankan fried rice is milder than the devils, which makes it a good base for a spicy side.

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

Where Sri Lankan fried rice comes from

Fried rice came to Sri Lanka through Chinese-style restaurant cooking, and over the years the island made it its own: more pepper, curry leaves in some kitchens, and a spicy devil or chilli dish served with it. That is why a Sri Lankan fried rice plate is closer to a full meal than a side.

Fried rice for a group of six

Two Fried Rice (Chicken) at $20, two Fried Rice (Beef) at $22, one Fried Rice (Shrimp) at $23 and one Fried Rice (Sea Food) at $22 is confirmed in your event quote. Put everything in the middle and share. Add a Chilli Shrimp ($18.99) if your table loves seafood, or a Vattalappam ($15) to finish.

Allergies to know about

The shrimp and seafood fried rice contain shellfish, so keep them away from anyone with a shellfish allergy, and serve them with their own spoon at a shared table. Tell us about any allergies when you order.

Storing leftover rice safely

Cooked rice should be cooled quickly and refrigerated within an hour or two, not left on the counter overnight. Eat it within a day or two, and reheat it until it is steaming hot all the way through. A hot pan with a spoonful of water brings it back better than a microwave.

Fried rice or biryani for a party?

Fried rice is lighter and quick to eat, good for a casual night. For a formal event, biryani combos are easier to plan because the sides are already built in.
