South Indian and Sri Lankan, side by side

Tamil cooking from Jaffna shares a lot with South Indian food: coconut, curry leaves, rice-flour dishes like puttu and dosa-style breads. The differences are roasted curry powders, more chilli and sides like eggplant moju and maasi sambal. Puttu Mixed ($20), Coconut Roti ($12) and our Northern-style Biriyani ($12) are good places to start.

Menu

  • Kottu Roti, $13, with an egg omelette
  • Biriyani, $12, chicken, beef, mutton or vegetable
  • Chicken Devil or Beef Devil, $12.99
  • Chilli Chicken, $14.99, and Chilli Shrimp, $18.99
  • Boneless Mutton Devil, $14.99
  • Puttu Mixed, $20, with your choice of meat, dhal curry and coconut sambol
  • Coconut Roti, $12, or Roast Bread, $13
  • Fried Rice, $20 to $23, and Sri Lankan Noodles, $15
  • Paalandi Half Chicken, $40, for the table
  • Vattalappam, $15, and Mango Lassi, $6

Allergy notes

Some of our dishes contain egg (kottu, egg masala, watalappan), dairy (yogurt sambal), fish (maasi sambal is made with dried Maldives fish) and nuts (green pea cashew curry). If anyone has an allergy, tell us when you order and we will tell you what to avoid.

If you usually order South Indian, try this

A quick guide for people who know South Indian food and want to find their way around a Sri Lankan menu.

  • If you love Kerala puttu and kadala: order Puttu Mixed ($20). Same steamed rice flour and coconut, served with your choice of meat, dhal curry and coconut sambal.
  • If you order Hyderabadi or Ambur biryani: try our Northern Sri Lankan style Biriyani ($12) in chicken, beef, mutton or vegetable. It comes with sweet and sour sides like eggplant moju and pineapple curry in the combos, which is very different from raita and salan.
  • If Chettinad chicken is your favourite: try the Chicken Devil ($12.99) or Chilli Chicken ($14.99) for a hot, sharp dish.
  • If you like Malabar ghee rice and kurma: our ghee rice combos for groups of 20 or more bring ghee rice with beef kuruma, korma and several sides.
  • If you finish with payasam: Vattalappam ($15) is the Sri Lankan answer, a steamed custard with kithul jaggery, coconut milk and cardamom.

What we do not make

To be clear up front: we do not make dosa, appam (hoppers), egg hoppers or plain idiyappam (string hoppers). The closest we have to idiyappam is the String Hopper Biryani Combo, $29 per person for 20 or more. For a bread with curry, try Coconut Roti ($12) with beef curry and dhal, or Roast Bread ($13) with coconut sambal and egg-milk curry.

Vegetarian choices

The Biriyani comes in a vegetable version. On request we make green peas curry, which our menu lists as naturally vegan, potato milk curry in coconut milk, and eggplant moju. For a group, the Vegetable Biryani Combo is $15 per person (it includes yogurt sambal, which has dairy).

A note on heat

Northern Sri Lankan cooking uses roasted curry powder, which gives a darker, deeper flavour than many South Indian curries. If you are used to milder Udupi-style food, start with potato milk curry or korma and work up to the devils.
